When Matt Spencer (Bill Travers) and his wife, Jean (Virginia McKenna), inherit a small cinema, the Bijou, from a distant relative, they are shocked to find a decrepit building that comes with a group of aging employees including grumpy projectionist Percy Quill (Peter Sellers). Matt and Jean try to sell the Bijou to Albert Hardcastle (Francis De Wolff), the owner of a successful large luxury nearby cinema, but he gives them a miserly offer. Instead, they decide to open and run the theatre themselves using a few clever marketing tactics to gain viewers at the expense of Hardcastle. Let the battle of the reels commence!
